In our society, there is a tendency to form a stereotype when it comes to appearance, creating models everybody should follow. The sad part is that most people will try to follow these patterns, not knowing why they are never happy with their appearance. Well, when you try to be someone else, which is not yourself, you will not be happy indeed. Try not to look at what is fashionable, guiding yourself more with what makes you comfortable and makes you feel satisfied and fulfilled when you look in the mirror. Don’t be afraid to show your personality. Here are some appearance quotes that will guide you through.
“Beware, so long as you live, of judging men by their outward appearance.” (Jean de La Fontaine)
“We should look to the mind, and not to the outward appearance.”
– Aesop
“Body love is more than acceptance of self or the acceptance of the body. Body love is about self-worth in general. It’s more than our physical appearance.” (Mary Lambert)
When you love your body, you shouldn’t just love how it looks, but also accept it and consider your entire person worthy. You need to be proud of yourself, comfortable in your own skin, and you will have a noticeable appearance.
“There are no ugly women, only lazy ones” (Helena Rubinstein)
When respecting yourself, you need to not allow to go out of the house not having a cared appearance. You don’t have to be rich to wear clean clothes, polished shoes, a clean face, perhaps with a bit of make-up, and a nicely arranged hair. It is a rule that applies in the case of men as well, because the way we are seen by the others is the way we treat ourselves.
“Why do people respect the package rather than the man?” (Michel de Montaigne, The Complete Essays)
As mentioned before presenting these appearance quotes, people tend to look at the package, or appearance of a person, rather than the person that is behind it. You may never know what hides behind the layer of clothes.
“Clothes and manners do not make the man; but when he is made, they greatly improve his appearance.” (Arthur Ashe)
The way we appear is not the way we should be defined, as it is only a way to underline what we are, in the best case scenario improving ourselves.
The appearance should never be a strong enough reason to make an opinion about a person, because such an opinion is shallow, just like the package. There is a real person behind it, who needs to be discovered. Maybe we just don’t feel one day to put on our best appearance, so does that mean that we should be judged as being sloppy and careless? Even if it’s not right to judge by appearance, it can help us, making us look better, increasing self-esteem and confidence, allowing us to bring the best of us.
